ABOUT THE WORK
Flightscapes is my latest work. Birds of endless variety and behaviors inhabit the environment outside my studio. A flash of color, a calliope of calls, flickering flight, or shifting silhouettes. When I found myself giving keen attention to this scene, I decided to make birds the focus of my new work and investigations. My goal is not to capture the likeness of birds, rather to capture something of their essence.
Trained as a painter, my creative canvas is now felt–and thread has become my pencil and brush. Photo transfers, found objects and mono-printing add surface detail. I came to felting by accident, but once introduced I was captivated by its tactile qualities, deeply embedded colors and range of subtleties. From the magical mesh of fibers I try to create a language of symbolic images and archetypal forms.
