LINEAR VISIONS

“Linear Visions” presents Jessica Fromm’s newest abstract oil paintings, created in 2007 and 2008, along with selected paintings from previous periods in the artist’s career. Curator Judith Landsman has chosen and juxtaposed these works compressing the arc of Fromm’s career thus far into a visual essay on the expressive potential of the painted line. Fromm’s earlier images were built by a careful, lyrical massing of expressive linear gestures. In recent years the artist expanded her statement by imposing the limitations of the grid on the canvas. The interaction with her gestural impulse, which continually asserted itself, resulted in new levels of pictorial tension. In her new work Fromm has increased the limitation by restricting herself to painting in more exclusively linear fashion, yet in a style clearly her own.
